A Twirly Christmas

I am so ready for 2019 to be over and welcome something new for 2020. Our family has had more than our fair share of unexpected losses this year including beloved family members, household-supporting jobs, and too many pets. I’m hoping that 2020 will be a year for new beginnings, the growth of this blog, my return to the workforce after being a stay at home mom for 8 years, a new kitten… it’s a new decade and that’s good timing for change.

One of these new beginnings is the roll out of dresses in my Etsy shop. I started my etsy shop with cloth diapers and a several sewing patterns for cloth trainers, swim diapers, and a little cloth doll. It’s safe to say I am out of the cloth diaper sewing stage now, but my shop remains and I keep my pattern listings active. As my third daughter is beginning to wear the hand-me-down dresses I made for my first, the nostalgia hits me and I need to sew more twirly dresses. It is time to re-connect with the vision that I had for my blog and my Etsy shop so many years ago when I was sewing dresses and crafts for my girls all the time.

What better way to work towards that new goal than with Christmas dresses in December? I pulled out my notes and borrowed a few of those hand-made hand-me-downs from my daughter’s drawer and got to work. The first dress was based off of my eldest’s favorite dress, so this style will be aptly named, Isabella.

The style of the second dress feels much more classic and delicate, so it will be named after my niece, Scarlett.

Much to be expected for my life right now, as soon as these dresses were completed I realized my own daughter did not have a dress to wear for the holiday program at school. With a single evening to spare, I scaled up the bodice of another pattern, gathered just enough fabric scraps, and started a dress for her at 8pm, knowing I would be at work the next morning and only had the one evening to get it right. No time for a muslin, it did end up being a smidge large in the bodice, but better a bit big than too small! Sadly, my jumbo ric rac was just a few inches too short and I didn’t have the time to fashion a red fabric flower to fill the gap. She still loved it without, and joyfully shared with her friends at school the next day how her mom was able to whip up a Christmas dress in one night. This dress style will be named after my holiday girl, Evelyn.
